Spiritual Springtime

Spring is a season of renewal. The old gives way to the new. The dried up husks of Winter become the soft shoots of Spring. And the abstinence of Lent becomes the abundance of Easter.

This change of seasons fitly symbolizes the spiritual change of believers. For we too were once as dead as Winter, not physically but spiritually. We were dead in our sins, hopeless and helpless to do any good (Ephesians 2:1). We were like fallen leaves, our destiny done and our journey ended. But, in Christ, something miraculous happened.

The Apostle Paul tells us that “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold; the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). In other words, if we repent of our sins and believe in Jesus, we are spiritually reborn. A tender green sprig shoots out of the dead stump of our former lives apart from Christ. A whole new story begins, a kind of spiritual springtime.

So as you look around at the newness of nature today, thank God for your own newness in Christ. Thank him for working a miracle in your own life. Thank him for taking the dead and brown that was you and transforming it into bright, living colors of purple and yellow and green. Thank him for your spiritual springtime.

If you’ve never had a spiritual springtime, then why not today? The Bible says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13). So why not do that today on the first day of Spring? Why not have your own spiritual first day of Spring? Call on the name of the Lord. Be reconciled to God.
