Psalm 103:4 who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
The Lord can redeem your life.
“Redeem” carries with it the idea of rescuing and restoring. The way a car enthusiast might rescue a car from the dump and restore it to “new,” or even better than new, so the Lord can and will rescue and restore you.

Even from pits. A pit is a fitting analogy for our troubles. If you’re in a pit, you are stuck. If you’re in a pit, there is no way out. If you’re in a pit, darkness surrounds you. But from this place of total helplessness and hopelessness, the Lord can rescue and restore you.
But it gets better!
It is not just that the Lord will get you out of the pit, pat you on your dusty back, and say good luck. It’s that he takes you from pits to palaces. The language shifts from crud to crowns.
There will be a coronation ceremony.
The Lord will crown you with steadfast love and mercy.
Out of the pit you are met with everlasting love. Out of the pit you are met with mercy.
We may fear what we will encounter if we call on the Lord from the pit. Will he scold us as we resurface?
But He crowns us with love and mercy. What good news!
So never hesitate to call on him for help. No matter the pit. No matter the problem. You can call on the Lord who redeems and crowns.
For this old sinner, this is my hope. It can be your hope, too.
